Exodus 20:1-17

The Law

God is a revelator! He reveals Himself and reveals His law. He is the Redeemer. He is the law Maker and the law Giver.

God made Himself known and reminds His people of what He has done for them, before he revealed the law – a firm assertion of supreme authority to enact the law, of indisputable right to command.

When God speaks, we are to listen. God deserves our listening and obeying because He is the Lord our God who has done SO much for us. God brought His children out of darkness, out of the bondage of sin. He has redeemed them – the once slaves but now are free. Because of this, in gratitude, we are bound to obey. And that is what God demands. The ground of such obedience is not the penalty of the law but of knowing that He is the Lord who redeemed us! We are to know God as our Redeemer and obey Him as such.

It is interesting to notice that the law was given to saved people to teach them how to live as saved children of God – its obedience is never a condition to be saved. And saved people’s obedience is based on the fact that the Lord is the God who saved them.

These commandments were summed up in the greatest commandment – “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' And “Love your neighbor as yourself.” ( Mark 12:29-31), NIV.

O Holy God, keep me reminded of who You are and what You have done for me. Help me to obey You not out of fear or duty but out of love and reverence and acknowledgment of Your Sovereignty, recognizing that You are my Lord God who redeemed me.
