The Work of the Spirit
Jesus is misunderstood. His family thinks He has mental problem. The teachers of the law says, He is possessed by the Devil. They even attribute to the Devil the work of God and Jesus.
How about us? Would we be able to recognize the work of God? Would we be able to distinguish it from the Devil’s work? The scripture says in 1 Cor. 2:12-16, “We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man's judgment: "For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?" But we have the mind of Christ.”
The passage also speaks of them whom Jesus calls His family. It has nothing to do with biological descent nor of legal relations. It talks about spiritual kinship. “Behold, my mother and my brethren,” is not exclusive privilege of the disciples. The same honor is afforded to the saints, the church. Those who does not only hear, know and speak about God’s will but do it, they are the family of God to whom Jesus lovingly owns as his brethren.
