Freedom through Forgiveness
Jesus sees. When the faithful friends did not give up in bringing their paralytic friend to Jesus, “Jesus saw their faith’ (verse 5). And He was moved to act. He sees what is much needed, (Son, your sins are forgiven). To God, forgiveness of sins is what fallen man’s greatest need.
Jesus forgives sins. For, Jesus is God. He has the authority to forgive. The teachers of the law correctly pointed out that God alone can forgive sins. What they failed to grasped is the truth that Jesus is God.
Physical and spiritual healing are both in the power of God! But what concerns Jesus more was the healing of the soul than of the wellness of the body. Oftentimes, people (in fact in this passage “so many”) seek God but for temporal things – physical blessings such as healing, protection, provision. But Jesus sees in us our great need for a Savior, our need for spiritual healing and by His mercy, we receive His grace. He pronounces the same words to us – “Son, your sins are forgiven!” Oh, is it not much much sweeter than “you are healed, get up of your bed.”
We need healing of our physical infirmities but we need forgiveness even more. We come to Jesus, the Son of God. He has power and authority to give us both, for He is God!
