Breaking the Rules
Jesus is Lord. Even of the Sabbath. The Pharisees accused Jesus of breaking the law, working on the Sabbath. Man looks at the law as restrictive, a burden. But the law was given to teach God’s people a life of obedience to the God who has done only good things for them. The law was for the good of man and not to his harm. It was to show the heart of God. For what man cannot perfectly fulfill, Jesus accomplishes on the cross. God gives grace.
Obedience to God should never be a burden but a joy, not a heavy religious chore but a joyful act of worship – a loving response to who God is to us. The passage shows that God looks at the inside, the heart, the motive. The Pharisees were filled with pride and hypocrisy. Their self righteousness made them believe they obey the law to the letter but their understanding was shallow and they were ignorant of the spirit of the law. They require people to obey to the letter as well. They just can’t understand the true meaning of Sabbath rest.
